When you think of a fly
fishing rod, do you think of a tool that helps you cast
line? Well of course you'd be right, but is that
all?
A fly fishing rod is a tool that you use to: cast out your fly fishing
line (notice I didn’t say “cast your
fly”), reposition your line and fly over the fish, and to
“play” fish when you get one on the hook!
Remember, you’ll be holding your rod almost the entire time
you fish, so you need something that is lightweight, but strong enough to
support the type of fishing and casting that you want to do. It’s an important
decision!
Our rods are medium action (medium flex, to be more precise), which is ideal for beginners.
The medium action makes it easier for beginners to learn to
cast. That’s not to say that the pro’s
don’t like medium action rods, but after you’ve
learned to cast you may decide that your style of casting lends itself
to a slow action (less stiff) or a fast action (more stiff)
rod. Each rod has advantages and drawbacks; which we go into
detail about in the article on fly fishing rods in the beginners guide
to fly fishing.
I’ll quote The Orvis Fly-Fishing Guide on rod selection:
“I’ll
stick my neck out and recommend that your first fly rod be between 8
1/2’ and 9’ long, and be made from
graphite. This seems to be the most efficient length for easy
fly casting, and graphite is more forgiving of casting mistakes than
any other material.
If you fish small
streams, lean toward an 8 1/2-footer; if you fish big rivers, lakes, or
salt water a 9-foot rod will be easier for the long casts or when the
wind is blowing.”
I couldn't have said it better myself. Check out our selection of rods by making you selection below: |
